Box Score 2 The Centre College baseball team split an SAA doubleheader against Berry College with a walk-off 3-2 win in game one before dropping game two 6-1 Saturday, April 19 at Gary Wright Field in Danville, Ky.
The two games were played on Centre's Senior Day in which its two seniors Kyle Cook (Maineville, Ohio) and Kyle Neu (Cincinnati, Ohio) were recognized between games.
Before that ceremony, Cook scored the game-winning run in bottom of the ninth off an RBI single by freshman Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) top give the Colonels a 3-2 victory.
Cook and sophomore Jake Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) scored a run each in the first inning on a pair of Berry errors for a 2-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the eighth when the Vikings scored a pair of unearned runs to tie the game at 2-2.
Centre went scoreless in the bottom of the eighth and held Berry scoreless in the top of the ninth to set up the game-winning run in the home half.
Cook led off with a single. After a pop-out, the senior then stole second base. An error gave the Colonels runners at first and third. Johnson was then intentionally walked to load the bases and Olson blooped a ball down the right field line that tipped off the glove of the Vikings' right fielder allowing Cook to score and give Centre the 3-2 win.
Sophomore Stephen Shunk (Lexington, Ky.) got a no decision, but allowed only two unearned runs through seven innings of work. He gave up eight hits and struck out four.
Sophomore Zach Montgomery (Louisville, Ky.) picked up his first collegiate victory as he threw two scoreless frames to finish the game. Montgomery becomes the eighth different Centre pitcher to earn his first collegiate win this season.
Cook, Olson, and junior Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.) finished with multi-hit games led by Cook's 3-for-5 effort.
Game two saw the Colonels fall behind 4-0 after the first two innings. Another run in the fourth made it 5-0, but Centre cut it to 5-1 when sophomore Matt Broering (Alexandria, Ky.) scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth.
Berry (26-13 overall, 14-7 SAA) added another run in the sixth, and the Colonels were unable to add any more as they tallied only three singles in the loss.
Freshman Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) took the loss. Short allowed four runs on seven hits in three innings of work.
Centre, now 13-22 overall and 7-12 in the SAA, will travel to Rome, Ga. to play in round one of the SAA Tournament Friday, April 25. The Colonels will open the tournament as the No. 6 seed and play No. 3 Rhodes at 2 p.m.
