Colonels defeat Pioneers, increase win streak to 5

Box Score

The Centre men's lacrosse team continued its midseason six-game road trip with a game at Transylvania. The Colonels defeated the Pioneers by a score of 11-9 and have won five games in a row, all on the road.

The game was a back and forth affair from the beginning. Senior Connor Stubbs (Decatur, Ga.) scored the first goal of the game in the first period, then assisted on a goal by sophomore Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) less than a minute later. Transy answered with one goal in the first period and the Colonels led 2-1 after one quarter.

Transylvania opened the scoring in the second quarter with a goal, but Centre fired back with two consecutive goals, one from senior Peter Murphy (Louisville, Ky.) and one on a Murphy assist to freshman Mitchell Kraus (Louisville, Ky.). The Pioneers would score the next three goals to take their only lead of the game at 5-4, but a pair of unassisted goals by Connor Stubbs, including one in the final minute of the half, gave the Colonels a 6-5 lead that they would not relinquish.

The two teams would alternate the next six goals in the third quarter and into the fourth, with Mitchell Kraus scoring one goal and Peter Murphy scoring once and assisting on a goal by junior Wesley Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.). With ten minutes to go in the game and Centre hanging onto a 9-8 lead, Centre came up big in the clutch, with Kraus and Murphy connecting on a goal at the five-minute mark and Stubbs adding his fourth goal of the game as insurance with 2:22 remaining. Transylvania could only score one more goal in the remaining time and the Colonels came away with the 11-9 victory. For the game the Colonels were 15 of 20 on clears and forced the Pioneers into committing 19 turnovers.

Centre's six-game road odyssey will conclude on Apr. 5th with a 2:00 P.M. tilt at Oglethorpe.
