Women's lacrosse advances to SAA championship with 13-9 win over Berry

Box Score

The Centre women's lacrosse team advanced to the Southern Athletic Association championship game for the second straight season by defeating Berry College 13-9 in a semifinal game Saturday in Danville, Ky.

Leading the way for the Colonels were Sarah Mastey (Chattanooga, Tenn.), who had four goals and an assist, and Meg Hawthorne (Cary, N.C.), who had three goals with four assists. Emily Madden (Louisville, Ky.) scored twice for Centre while Ellen Resinger (Louisville, Ky.), Jacqueline Anderson (Louisville, Ky.), Katy Cremer (Hudson, Ohio) and Audrey Powers (Chattanooga, Tenn.) all scored single goals. Kristan Dziurzynski and Sara Witten each scored twice to lead Berry.

Centre will face Sewanee in the SAA championship game for the second straight year after the Tigers defeated Birmingham-Southern 22-8 in Saturday's second game. Sewanee won 19-13 in last year's championship and also eliminated the Colonels in the semifinals of the 2012 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference semifinals, though Centre won 10-4 in the teams' regular season meeting this year.

Centre never trailed after scoring twice in the first five minutes of Saturday's game. Berry kept the game close throughout, but Centre took a 5-2 lead to halftime and then pulled away by scoring the first three goals of the second half. The Vikings pulled within three on three occasions in the second half, but would get no closer as the Colonels held on for the 13-9 win.

Centre took 27 shots to Berry's 19, and Allison Eisner (Louisville, Ky.) made seven saves for the Colonels while Taylor Martin had eight stops for the Vikings. Centre also had a 15-9 advantage in draw controls and a 32-25 edge in ground balls.

Centre moves to 16-2 while Berry wraps up its season at 9-7. The Colonels will take on Sewanee for the SAA championship at noon on Sunday.
