After being released by the Carolina Panthers, Centre alum Jordan Gay will have a second chance to make a 2014 NFL roster after being claimed off waivers by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday.
Gay, a 2013 Centre graduate, had been in training camp with the Panthers for the second straight season, with a brief stint in the New York Giants organization in between. He appeared in three games preseason games for the Panthers this year, punting for an average of 35.3 yards per kick while also handling some of the kickoff duties. In his final game with the Panthers against the New England Patriots on Friday, Gay punted twice for an average of 48.5 yards with a long of 59 yards and a punt inside the 20-yard-line.
Gay will join the Bills immediately, where he will have the opportunity to compete with Brian Moorman for the punting job. Moorman, a 14th year player out of Pittsburg State, averaged 41.2 yards on his punts during the 2013 season. After the Bills released punter Jake Dombrowski and kicker Dustin Hopkins on Monday, Gay will have the chance to compete with Moorman or potentially stick with the team as a kickoff specialist.
The Bills face the Detroit Lions in their final preseason game on Thursday, and NFL teams' final 53-man rosters must be announced by 4 p.m. on Saturday.
Gay earned his NFL opportunity after standing out as a kicker and punter at Centre from 2010-12. During his time with the Colonels, Gay was recognized as an All-American and was also selected three times as conference special teams player of the year.
