Box Score After dropping a hard-fought season opener, the Centre field hockey team bounced back in a big way with a 6-0 win over Earlham on Sunday in Danville, Ky.
Centre looked like the team that opened the year by winning its first eight games a year ago, getting the only goal it would need in the game's first seven minutes and going on to tally three goals in each half. Julie Gates (Louisville, Ky.) scored twice, and five players scored in all for the Colonels.
Kelsey Gordon (Louisville, Ky.) got the scoring started off an assist from Erin Mays (Louisville, Ky.) six minutes into the game, and the Colonels never looked back. A pair of goals by Gates made the score 3-0 at halftime.
Though Centre took some time to find the cage in the second half, Megan Flocken (Dexter, Mich.) made the score 4-0 just inside the 14 minute mark, and Hayley Barker (Louisville, Ky.) added another just 30 seconds later. Cole Jordan (Louisville, Ky.) capped the scoring with a goal in the closing minutes.
Centre dominated the statistical categories, taking 43 shots to Earlham's seven. Kirby Roberts (Louisville, Ky.) and Lena Jewler (Saratoga, Calif.) combined to keep Earlham from scoring, with Jewler making three saves. Brynna Foreman made 10 saves for Earlham.
Centre evens its record at 1-1 on the year, while Earlham drops to 0-2. The Colonels will take to the road next weekend, when they will take on Wittenberg at DePauw on Friday before facing the host Tigers on Saturday.
