Volleyball drops two at Maryville Invitational

After falling 3-0 to Capital in its first match, the Centre College volleyball team also fell 3-0 to host Maryville Saturday, Sept. 13 at the Maryville Invitational in Maryville, Tenn.    

The Colonels opened the day scoring the first point of match against Capital, but tied at 3-3, Centre was out scored 13-4 to fall behind 13-5 in game one.  

Three of the next four points went to the Colonels, but Capital scored 11 of the final 19 points to win the first game 25-16. 

The Crusaders scored the first three points of game two, but Centre pulled within one point at 12-11. Capital then went on a 13-5 run to close the game and take a 2-0 lead in the match. 

The Colonels fell behind early in game three and were unable to recover as the Crusaders completed the 3-0 victory with a 25-13 win. 

Junior Beth Cecil (Bardstown, Ky.) led the team with 13 kills. Junior Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) had 18 assists, and junior Erin McGrath (Louisville, Ky.) finished with 11 digs in the defeat. 

The first game against Maryville also saw Centre fall, this time losing 25-19, but it looked like the Colonels started to gain some traction in game two. 

Centre scored the first three points and held a 16-13 lead. The Scots rallied with four straight points to go in front 17-16, but the Colonels answered with four straight points of their own to regain the lead at 20-17. Maryville, however, scored the next four points and eight of the final 11 points to win game two 25-23 for a 2-0 lead. 

Game three was tight in the early going as neither team led by more than three points until the Colonels took a 13-9 lead. 

The Scots scored eight of the next nine points to take a 17-14 lead, but Centre would tie the game at 18-18 with a 4-1 run. Maryville then went on to score the final seven points of the match to finish with the 3-0 win. 

Senior Suzanne Asbury (Louisville, Ky.) had a team-high 10 kills. Janszen recorded 22 assists, and McGrath notched 18 digs. 

Centre, now 2-8 overall, will look to snap it's losing skid Wednesday, Sept. 17 when the Colonels open SAA play against Sewanee. Start time is set for 7:30 p.m. CDT. In Sewanee, Tenn.
