Box Score The Centre women's soccer team played to its first draw of the season, coming up with a 1-1 result at Case Western Reserve on Sunday in Cleveland, Ohio.
The highlight for the Colonels came early in the second half when Katie Upton (Danville, Ky.) scored on an assist from Anne Mitchell (Fayetteville, Ark.) in the 59th minute. The goal was the first in her Centre career for the sophomore transfer, while Mitchell's assist helps give her the team lead in points with nine.
To that point, Centre had been outshot 5-1 and had escaped a scoring opportunity by Case when a Caitlyn McGillis shot hit the crossbar in the opening moments of the second half. Unfortunately for the Colonels, who came into the game off a win in the closing minutes at Ohio Wesleyan on Friday, the Spartans would provide Sunday's late-game heroics with an equalizer in the 83rd minute. The Case goal developed when an Amy Lindberg shot struck the crossbar with McGillis there to clean up the rebound.
Centre outshot Case 2-1 in the overtime periods, but neither team was able to find the net the rest of the way. For the game, Case took 10 shots to Centre's six with Centre putting all six of those shots on goal to the Spartans' five. The Colonels also held a 6-3 advantage in corners.
Olivia Alford (Louisville, Ky.) made four saves in goal for the Colonels while Abbey Smith had five stops for Case Western Reserve.
The game was the first draw of the season for both teams, and it was also the first overtime game for the Colonels, who went to overtime three times and had two draws last season. Before Sunday, Centre had won two straight games over the Spartans, who were an NCAA Tournament team as recently as 2011. With Sunday's result, Centre's record moves to 4-1-1 while Case comes away with a 3-1-1 record. The Colonels return to action with a trip to Denison on Saturday.
