Men's golf wins season opener

The Centre men's golf team opened its 2014-15 season at home with the Jim English Centre Invite at Danville C.C. The Colonels won the tournament with a combined team score of 291.

Centre's score of 291 was good enough to finish two shots ahead of second place Spalding at 293. Bellarmine finished third with a score of 299, followed by Thomas More and Hanover.

Individually, the low man for the Colonels was senior Grant Blevins (Danville, Ky.), who finished second overall with a score of 70. Junior Bryan Griffin (Greensboro, N.C.) and sophomore Carson Riley (Hendersonville, Tenn.) each fired rounds of 73, while senior Wilson Trent (Charlotte, N.C.) and sophomore Dakota Jarman (Danville, Ky.) rounded out the scoring for Centre, each posting scores of 75.

Freshmen Will Hellman (Louisville, Ky.) and Andrew McKinney (Danville, Ky.) entered as individuals and each posted scores of 73 for the Colonels, while senior Rob Aldrich (Ann Arbor, Mich.) shot a round of 74.

"We were pleased to be able to go out and win the first tournament of the year, which will help provide some momentum for our team going into the fall season," said Grant Blevins. "We have a very talented team this year and it's exciting to see how competition brings out the best in all of our players. We are having a lot of fun out there as we continue to try and get better each and every tournament"

"I couldn't be prouder of both programs," said head coach/director of golf Bruce Brown. "I think the chemistry we're showing is awesome. Everyone has worked really hard since getting back on campus, and I'm excited about the way we started."

The Colonels will not have long to rest, as they will play in Lexington, Ky. at the Transylvania Fall Invitational this weekend.
