No. 14 Colonels Capture SAA Regular Season Title, Tournament Hosting Rights with 3-0 Victory at Berry

ROME, Ga. (CentreAthletics.com) – The 14th-ranked Centre women's soccer team won its third Southern Athletic Association regular season championship in four years on Sunday, defeating Berry by a score of 3-0 in the 2015 regular season finale. Twelfth-year head coach Jay Hoffman's squad also captured regular season titles in 2012 and 2013, before adding a third championship on Sunday.

Also with the win, the Colonels earned the top seed and hosting rights for the entirety of the upcoming SAA Tournament. Centre finishes the regular season with a 14-1-1 overall record and a 6-0-1 ledger in SAA play, sharing the conference regular season crown with Sewanee (6-0-1). The Colonels won the tiebreaker over the Tigers to earn the top seed and hosting rights.

Centre recorded its fourth consecutive shutout win and ninth shutout triumph of the season overall with the victory over the Vikings. The Colonels outscored opponents 50-11 this season, including a total of 20-4 in conference play. Centre outshot opposing teams by a 334-100 clip, an average of 20.9-7.1 shots per game.

On Sunday, junior forward Rachel Harris' (Ridgeland, Miss.) second goal of the season in the 39th minute of action gave Centre a 1-0 lead.

Just over a minute into the second half, senior forward Alex Combs (Danville, Ky.) pushed the Colonels' advantage to 2-0 with a goal off an assist by sophomore defender Mackenzie Kern (Cincinnati, Ohio).

Later in the half, junior forward Destinie Graves' (Lexington, Ky.) SAA-leading 21st goal of the season on a penalty kick sealed the Centre victory and the SAA title.

Centre outshot the Vikings 21-6 in the contest, including an 18-4 margin in shots on goal. The Colonels also held an 11-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Centre junior goalkeeper Olivia Alford (Louisville, Ky.) played all 90 minutes in net for the Colonels, making three saves and posting her first shutout of the season.

Centre will look to win its fourth straight SAA title when the tournament begins next weekend in Danville. The Colonels' defense of the tournament championship will commence against eighth-seeded Oglethorpe in a quarterfinal matchup on Saturday, Oct. 31. Centre topped the Stormy Petrels 5-0 on Friday night. 

No. 2 Sewanee will take on seventh-seeded Millsaps, No. 3 Rhodes faces off with No. 6 Hendrix and the No. 4 seed Berry clashes with No. 5 Birmingham Southern also next Saturday. Game times for these quarterfinal matchups will be announced on Monday.
