(CentreAthletics.com) – After the Southern Athletic Association men's soccer quarterfinal matchup between sixth-seeded Centre and the No. 3 seed Berry was knotted after 110 minutes of action, the Colonels bested the host Vikings 4-1 in a penalty-kick shootout to earn a spot in the SAA Semifinals on Friday at Millsaps in Jackson, Miss.
Berry took a 1-0 lead in the first half when Steven Moore scored off the assist by Anu Campbell on a cross in the 23rd minute of action.
The Colonels evened the scored early in the second half when freshman forward Alexander Garuba (Norcross, Ga.) notched his team-leading sixth goal of the season at the 49:07 mark. Garuba has scored in three of the last four contests for Centre.
The two teams played scoreless soccer for the final 40-plus minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime.
The Colonels would dominate the shootout, finding the back of the net in each of their four attempts.
Senior forward Jacob Trumbull (Yellow Springs, Ohio), sophomore forward Noah Wesley-Chevalier (Cincinnati, Ohio) and senior forward Connor Reed (Newbury Park, Calif.) each executed a goal on their attempts, before sophomore midfielder Harrison Dunn (Lexington, Ky.) clinched the win with the fourth goal of the shootout for Centre.
Centre freshman goalkeeper Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.) made two crucial saves during the shootout to help the Colonels advance.
Centre moved to 7-8-2 on the season and will face the host and No. 2 seed Majors on Friday. The Colonels own a 19-6 all-time record against the Majors.
Millsaps defeated seventh-seeded Hendrix 6-2 in the quarterfinals and will host the semifinals and title match after top-seeded Oglethorpe was upset in the first round by the No. 8 seed Sewanee, who advanced past the Stormy Petrels on penalty kicks.
