Centre Beats Hanover and Brescia, Extends Win Streak to Five

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreAthletics.com) – The Centre volleyball team will be entering next week's Southern Athletic Association Tournament on its longest winning streak of the season after defeating Hanover and Brescia to cap off the 2015 regular season. The wins were the fourth and fifth in a row for the Colonels.

Centre grabbed the early lead in the opening set against Hanover, forcing a Panthers timeout at 12-6. Hanover rallied to tie the score at 14-14, but Centre regained the momentum and gradually rebuilt the lead. Hanover could get no closer as the Colonels won 25-19.

The second set was closely contested the entire way. Centre took a 19-15 lead, but Hanover came back, eventually tying the score at 20-20. With the score tied at 23-23, Jazmine Cline-Bailey (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Abbigale Jacobi (Louisville, Ky.) put home the final two kills for the 25-23 Centre victory.

In the third set it would be the Panthers who jumped out to the early lead, going ahead by as many as nine points at 14-5 and never looking back en route to a 25-17 win.

The fourth set played out in a similar fashion to the second set, with neither team able to build a cushion. Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) keyed a late Centre run with a pair of critical kills to help the Colonels get to a match point at 24-19. The Panthers would not go away, fighting off the match point three times before Abbi Jacobi scored with the final kill of the match and a 25-22 Centre win.

Beth Cecil (Bardstown, Ky.) led Centre with ten kills against Hanover, followed by Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) and Abbigale Jacobi with nine and Jazmine Cline-Bailey with eight kills. Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with 38 of Centre's 41 assists. Erin McGrath posted a team-high 19 digs for the Colonels, with Elizabeth Janszen adding seven.

Against Brescia, the Colonels gradually built their lead throughout the opening set, with Beth Cecil recording kills on three of the final six points as Centre pulled away to a 25-16 win.

In the second set, Centre used a run of eight straight points to turn an 8-4 deficit into a 12-8 lead. The Bobcats would come back and eventually take the lead at 21-20, but would only score one more point the rest of the way as Hailey Foote and Abbi Jacobi combined on a block for the final point in Centre's 25-22 second set victory.

Aces from Erin McGrath and Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) helped Centre build its lead in the final set as the Colonels jumped out to a 15-9 lead and would not lead by less than three points the rest of the way, eventually winning by a score of 25-21.

Beth Cecil's ten kills once again paced the Colonels, with Hailey Foote and Abbi Jacobi each adding three. Elizabeth Janszen recorded a game high 25 assists, while Erin McGrath and Beth Cecil tied for the team lead in digs with 11.

The Colonels, now with a record of 16-13 on the year, will head to Conway, Ark. for next week's SAA Tournament and will face Millsaps in the quarterfinals. The Colonels and Majors split their pair of meetings this season with the home team holding serve both times.
