Colonels Celebrate Senior Day with 41-14 Rout of Rhodes; Haden Sets School Career Touchdown Pass Record

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreAthletics.com) – The Centre football team won its fourth straight game on Saturday afternoon with a 41-14 senior day victory over visiting Rhodes in a Southern Athletic Association contest on at Farris Stadium. In the win, redshirt-senior quarterback Heath Haden (Kingsport, Tenn.) set yet another school record, becoming the program's all-time leader in career passing touchdowns.

Haden threw for four touchdowns against the Lynx on Saturday and now has 66 career touchdown passes, passing Brian Behrendt, who tallied 65 career passing touchdowns for the Colonels from 2001-04. Haden set the record on the final score of the afternoon, finding senior wide receiver Jake Johnson (Louisville, Ky.) on a three-yard touchdown pass. It also marked Haden and Johnson's third touchdown connection on the day.

The Colonels boosted their records to 7-2 overall and 5-2 in conference action, while Rhodes dropped to 4-5 on the year and 2-5 in league play.

Centre jumped out to a 20-7 first quarter lead after three total touchdowns from Haden. The Kingsport, Tenn. native ran into the end zone from eight yards out on the Colonels' first drive, just under two minutes into the game. Junior running back Nolan Coulter's 51-yard rush on the first play from scrimmage drove the ball to the Lynx 14-yard line.

Rhodes answered right back as quarterback PJ Settles scored on a 72-yard run to even the score at 7-7 at the 12:28 mark of the opening quarter.

On the next Centre drive, Haden found sophomore tight end Austin Hayes (Hendersonville, Tenn.) for a three-yard touchdown strike to regain the lead for the Colonels.

After the Colonel defense forced a Lynx three-and-out, Haden found Johnson for a 17-yard touchdown pass, extending the Centre advantage to two touchdowns.

In the second quarter, Haden would find Johnson yet again, this time on a 55-yard scoring strike to give the Colonels a 27-7 lead with 9:36 showing on the clock.

Rhodes responded with an Alex Chavez 13-yard touchdown run on its next drive, capping a 13-play, 66-yard drive and cutting the Centre advantage to 27-14.

However, this would be the last time the Lynx put points on the board, as the Colonels scored 14 unanswered points to close the game.

After a scoreless third quarter, junior running back Casey Bradley (Acworth, Ga.) scored his fourth touchdown of the season on a six-yard run to push the Centre lead to 34-14 with 11:37 remaining in the game.

Haden then tossed the record-setting touchdown to Johnson to cap the 41-14 triumph. He finished 10-of-21 for 151 yards and four touchdowns to go along with 10 rushes for a season-high 83 yards and a touchdown on the ground.

Coulter had a season-high 157 yards rushing on the day for his seventh 100-yard performance of the season. The 157 yards represent the third-highest total for his career.

Johnson caught five passes for a game-high 111 yards and three touchdowns for the Colonels. It marks his third career 100-yard receiving game and second in as many weeks.

Junior defensive end Ben Bo stick (Liberty Township, Ohio) recorded a team-high eight tackles, while senior linebacker Conor Flaherty (Columbus, Ohio) and sophomore defensive end Shane Smith (Crestwood, Ky.) each finished with seven stops apiece on the day.

Settles had a game-high 214 rushing yards on 23 carries to go along with a touchdown. He completed 10-of-22 passes for 103 yards.

Centre outgained the Lynx 509-367 in the win, including advantages of 158-103 through the air and 351-264 on the ground. Saturday's game marks the Colonels' fifth game this season with at least 500 yards of total offense.

Centre was 10-of-15 (67 percent) on third down, compared to Rhodes' 6-of-17 (35 percent).

The Colonels close the 2015 regular season at Berry next Saturday. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. in Rome, Ga. The Vikings are tied for first place in the SAA standings with a 6-1 mark in conference play. Berry dropped a 14-7 decision to Birmingham Southern on Saturday.

Centre can capture a share of the SAA regular season championship with a win at Berry and a Hendrix loss at Sewanee.
