Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreAthletics.com) – The Centre women's basketball team returned home for a mid-week contest against the Berea Mountaineers. After a back and forth game, mistakes doomed the Colonels down the stretch as they fell to Berea by a score of 61-52.
Berea built a small lead in the first quarter before senior Alexis Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) cut the deficit in half with a three-pointer in the final minute of the period. Guy would score eight of her game high 22 points in the opening quarter as the Colonels trailed 16-13.
The Colonels would take a 23-20 lead in the second frame after baskets by freshmen Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) and Madison Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.), but Berea responded with 11 consecutive points to take an eight-point lead. The Colonels would score on their final offensive possession of the half on a Stewart jumper and trail 31-25 entering the locker room at halftime.
Berea connected on a three-pointer on the first possession of the second half to take a nine-point lead, the biggest of the game for the Mountaineers, but Centre responded with an offensive flurry. Alexis Guy, Abigail Stewart, senior Kaitlyn McKnight (Lebanon Junction, Ky.), junior Michele Judy (Crittenden, Ky.) and freshman Katie Moore (Hyden, Ky.) all contributed baskets in a 13-2 Centre run that saw the Colonels score on six trips in a row to take a 38-36 lead. After a pair of lead changes, Berea's Erica Rogers connected on a three-pointer with nine seconds remaining in the quarter to give Berea a 43-41 lead.
Centre scored the first eight points of the fourth quarter as Guy and McKnight each made a pair of baskets to give the Colonels their biggest lead at 49-43. A Guy jumper at the 6:50 mark gave Centre a 51-46 lead, but Berea's defense clamped down, forcing four straight turnovers as a layup by Adriana Williams put Berea on top. Centre tied the game at 52-all on a free throw by Rice, but a basket by Erica Rogers and a free throw by Anna Loveless put the Mountaineers up by three. The Colonels committed two more turnovers in the final minute and Berea iced the game away on Bethanie Williams's free throws.
Alexis Guy led Centre with 22 points on 9-17 shooting and also added six rebounds.
Abigail Stewart pulled down a game high nine rebounds to go along with eight points and four blocks as the Colonels outrebounded the Mountaineers 38-32.
Erica Rogers led Berea with 19 points.
Next up for the Colonels will be a trip to Crestview Hills, Ky. to take on the Thomas More Saints on Dec. 16. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
