Box Score The Centre women's basketball team was unable to come back from an early deficit in suffering a 68-56 senior day loss to Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association game Sunday at Alumni Gymnasium.
After opening their previous game on a 16-0 run in a Friday win over Rhodes, the Colonels found themselves on the other end of a quick start. The game featured just one tie at 2-2, and Hendrix led the rest of the way after jumping out to a 16-6 lead.
Olivia Colliver (Mount Sterling, Ky.) and Alexis Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) led Centre with 11 points each, while Paige Kellam chipped in 10. Anna King of Hendrix lead all scorers with 16 points, while teammate Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler added 15.
The game was also the final regular season home game for seniors Maggie Hartlage (Louisville, Ky.), who finished with five points and six rebounds, and Alanna Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio), who has missed all but one game this season due to injury after starting last season. Both were honored in a postgame ceremony.
After taking the early lead, Hendrix used an 8-0 run to go up by 16 points at 28-12. The Warriors took a 38-25 lead to the half, then scored six of the first eight points after the break to take their biggest lead at 44-27.
Centre began to chip away at the lead, outscoring Hendrix 17-8 over an eight minute stretch. A Caroline Andreassen (Palm Harbor, Fla.) free throw briefly got the margin to single digits at 57-48 with 4:28 to play, but it was as close as the Colonels would get.
Hendrix held the advantage across the board in shooting, going 46 percent from the field, 33 percent from 3-point range, and 78 percent from the free throw line to the Colonels' 42 percent overall, 18 percent from outside, and 59 percent from the line. Centre held a 34-32 edge on the boards, and both teams turned the ball over eight times.
With the loss, Centre drops to 8-12 overall and 4-6 in SAA play, while Hendrix improves to 10-11 overall and pulls even at 5-5 in the conference. The Colonels are back in action with a trip to Birmingham-Southern on Friday.
