Box Score 2 The Centre baseball team picked up its first win of the season in a split of a midweek doubleheader against the Transylvania Pioneers at St. Xavier High School. The Colonels took the first game 6-4 and lost the second game 11-5. Both games went seven innings.
In game 1, Centre's bats caught fire from the start in the form of a three-run first inning. Singles by Alex Richardson (Mount Washington, Ky.) and Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.) scored Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) and Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.), and then Richardson scored on a fielder's choice by Tanner Sauley (Madison, Ind.) to put the Colonels up 3-0 at the end of the first frame.
Centre added to the lead in the fourth inning when a fielder's choice by Grant Herald (Lexington, Ky.) brought home Sullivan Smoak (Knoxville, Tenn.). After the Pioneers put their first run of the day on the board, Centre came back with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning on singles by Evans and Sauley.
Transy would score in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch and threatened in the seventh with a two-run double, but Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) forced a comebacker to end the game and seal a 6-4 Colonels victory. Jordan Short (Neon, Ky.) picked up the win for the Colonels, allowing three hits and two runs in five innings of work while striking out five Pioneer batters.
Centre began game 2 with another quality first inning as Andrew Olson scored on an Alex Richardson sacrifice and a Greyson Evans single brought home Trey Litsey to make it 2-0, but this time Transylvania would come back with a huge inning, scoring seven runs in the third inning.
Centre cut the deficit to 7-4 after singles by Olson and Richardson scored Ben Coates (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Grant Herald, but Transy answered right back in the bottom of the fifth with their own pair of runs. Charlie Grigsby (Lexington, Ky.) brought home Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) on an RBI groundout for the Colonels' final run of the day in the 11-5 loss.
The next games for the Centre baseball team will be a three-game home weekend series with the Hendrix Warriors on Mar. 14th-15th.
