Centre baseball drops doubleheader to Hendrix

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Centre baseball team was swept in by Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association doubleheader, falling 18-3 and 9-3 on Sunday at Gary Wright Field.

In the first game, Hendrix jumped out to an early lead by plating three runs in the top of the first inning and another five in the second. The Warriors took advantage of errors in both innings, with the biggest blows coming on an RBI double by Drew Judson and a two-run single by Jake Wiegand in the second.

Hendrix added another run on a sacrifice fly by Wiegand in the fourth inning, but the Colonels began to battle back, beginning with a Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.) home run in the bottom of the sixth. Centre then cut the margin to 9-3 on an RBI single by Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.) and a Matt Touhy (Glencoe, Ill.) fielder's choice in the seventh. Unfortunately for the Colonels, Hendrix was able to string together six hits and take advantage of an error to finish the game with a nine-run eighth inning.

The second game was more competitive, but the Colonels spent most of the game battling back from a four-run first inning by Hendrix. With a leadoff single being the only hit in the inning, the Warriors managed to go up 4-0 after two walks, a hit batter, and a wild pitch.

Hendrix added another two runs on RBI singles by Wyatt Hogan and Harley Frye in the top of the third, but Centre was able to get on the board when Zach Montgomery (Louisville, Ky.) brought home Alex Richardson (Mount Washington, Ky.) on a single in the bottom half of the inning.

Hendrix went on to build the lead to 9-1 on runs from an error, a wild pitch, and a James Martin RBI single in the fifth. Centre cut away at the Hendrix lead, making the score 9-3 after an RBI groundout by Richardson in the fifth and a bases loaded walk by Litsey in the sixth.

The Colonels put together opportunities to get back in the game by loading the bases in each of the last two innings, but a Richardson fly ball to the warning track ended the sixth inning, and Centre stranded three runners again in the seventh.

Daniel Imbro took the win in the first game for the Warriors after allowing three runs over seven innings, while Kyle Teachout worked the first five in game two and allowed two runs in the win. Starting pitchers Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) and Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) were on the wrong end of both decisions for Centre.

Centre drops to 1-10 overall and 0-9 in SAA play with Sunday's results, while Hendrix improves to 7-8 overall and 4-5 in the conference. The Colonels return to the field with a trip to Thomas More on Tuesday.
