Box Score The Centre men's lacrosse team used a pair of goals in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime against the Berry Vikings, and then Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) scored the game winner as the Colonels defeated Berry 13-12 in overtime.
It was one of the wildest games in program history for the Colonels, a back and forth affair that saw nine lead changes and nine ties. Seth Gray and Joe Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio) paced Centre with three goals each, while Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) finished with two goals and three assists. Gray, Lencewicz, Wes Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) and Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) all scored goals for the Colonels in a first period that ended 4-4.
The Colonels won the second period 4-3 as Matt Hughes, Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) and Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.) all scored goals, but the biggest one came with just eight seconds remaining as Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.) found Joe Lencewicz for a goal that gave Centre an 8-7 lead going into the locker room for halftime.
Defense ruled the day in the third quarter as the two teams were only able to muster up a pair of goals each, with Lencewicz and Gray scoring for the Colonels. After Gray's goal, the Vikings would score the next four goals of the contest to take a 12-10 lead with 2:28 remaining and set the stage for a thrilling comeback.
With 1:49 left, Wes Hardman cut the deficit to 12-11 with an unassisted goal. Then, after Robert Anthony (Louisville, Ky.) won a key faceoff, Matt Hughes scored off of an assist by Dustin Cowell to tie the game at 12 with just 38 seconds remaining. The Colonels were unable to score on their final possession of regulation, but then Seth Gray scored off of a Hardman assist just minutes into the overtime period for the game winner.
Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) stopped 14 shots for the Colonels in goal as Centre held slight advantages over Berry in shots, faceoff percentage and ground balls.
The Colonels will play a pair of games over their Spring Break week, traveling to Calvin on Tuesday and then facing Birmingham Southern at Farris Stadium on Saturday.
