Men's lacrosse rolls to 13-1 win at Calvin

Box Score

The Centre men's lacrosse game picked up its second victory in a row, improving to .500 on the season with a 13-1 win against Calvin in Grand Rapids, Mich.

The Colonels dominated the game from the outset, scoring two minutes into the contest on an unassisted goal from Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.). Gray recorded the first of his career-high five assists later in the first period on a goal by Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) as Centre ended the first quarter up 2-0.

In the second quarter, the Colonels broke the game open with six goals. Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) scored three goals in the period, while Seth Gray, Mason Paas (Louisville, Ky.) and Bryant Portwood (Charlotte, N.C.) each scored one goal. Matt Hughes had two assists for Centre in the second period, while Gray and Robert Anthony (Louisville, Ky.) each dished out one assist in helping the Colonels jump out to an 8-0 lead heading into halftime.

The Colonels did not put on the offensive explosion in the third quarter, but still managed three goals in the period. Zehnder scored his third goal of the game on an assist by Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.), and then Gray assisted on two more goals, the first by Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.), and the second on a man up effort by Wes Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) that put Centre up 11-0 with one quarter left to play.

In the fourth quarter, the Colonels tacked on two more goals as Lorenzo Powell (Newcastle, Wash.) and freshman Joseph Bagwell (Roswell, Ga.) each scored, with Gray and Rush providing the assists. Centre goalkeepers Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio), Will Smith (Lexington, Va.) and Tom Whalen (Massapequa, N.Y.) combined to hold Calvin scoreless for nearly 59 minutes before Calvin scored in the final minutes of the game to cap off the scoring as the Colonels won 13-1.

The Colonels outshot Calvin 39-15, held a 35-19 advantage in ground balls and forced Calvin into 24 turnovers. Centre also controlled the faceoff, winning 12 of 17 faceoffs for the game with Bryant Portwood and Joe Mizhir combining for ten faceoff wins.

The Centre men's lacrosse team will play a pair of conference games at Farris Stadium over the weekend. The Colonels will take on Birmingham Southern on Friday and Millsaps on Sunday.
