Centre men fall 14-10 after late surge by Carthage

Box Score

The Centre men's lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the season as Carthage closed out the game with four straight goals for a 14-10 final on Saturday in Kenosha, Wisc.

The lead changed hands four times, and the game was tied as late as the 12-minute mark in the fourth quarter after a Joe Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio) goal evened the score at 10. It was all Carthage from that point, however, as the Red Men scored three times over the next three minutes while shutting out Centre the rest of the way.

Eamon DeLay (Hempstead, N.Y.), Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.), Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.), and Wes Hardman (Narragansett, R.I.) each scored two goals for the Colonels, while Lencewicz had a goal and two assists and Sam Rush (Cornelius, N.C.) had a single goal. Carthage's Jared Ferrell and Tanner Thomas tied for a game-high with three goals each.

The game went back and forth over the first three quarters, beginning with Centre taking a 2-0 lead on goals by Hughes and Rush. Carthage answered with the next three goals, and the teams finished the quarter tied at three.

A Hughes goal gave Centre what would be its last lead of the day at 4-3, but Carthage scored four straight to take a 7-4 lead. Goals by DeLay and Hardman cut the margin to 7-6 by halftime, and the two scored back-to-back goals again in the third quarter to tie the score at eight. Centre tied the game on two more occasions, but was unable to retake the lead.

Carthage held advantages nearly across the board in the statistical categories, leading 42-28 in shots, 20-7 in faceoffs, and 37-25 in ground balls. Bryce McCoy (Hudson, Ohio) made 15 saves in goal for Centre while Ryan Smith had 12 stops in the win for Carthage.

Carthage stays perfect on the year at 4-0 while Centre falls even at 2-2. The Colonels return to action Wednesday when they host Wooster at 4 p.m. at Farris Stadium.
