Box Score The Centre baseball team capped its regular season with its fourth win in five games, defeating Berea 7-4 on Tuesday at Gary Wright Field.
The Colonels trailed 2-1 and were down to their last six outs when they rallied for six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Charlie Grigsby (Lexington, Ky) had a big day at the plate for Centre, going 3-for-5 with two RBIs in the game, while Trey Litsey (Louisville, Ky.), Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.), and Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) each tallied a hit and an RBI.
"I'm really happy for our two seniors," said head coach Mike Pritchard. "It's been a tough year and hasn't gone the way anyone planned, but I'm glad we were able to give Matt (Cox) and Trey a win in their final home game."
It was the Colonels who struck first in the game, going up 1-0 when Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) reached on an error, stole second base, and scored on a single by Grigsby. With Centre calling on eight different pitchers in relief after Cox worked a scoreless first inning, the Mountaineers were only able to break through in a fourth inning in which they turned three walks and a hit batsman into two runs.
Leading 2-1, Berea was able to hold on by stranding two Centre runners in the fourth and sixth innings before the Colonels finally broke through in the eighth. Centre also took advantage of control problems for its big inning, capitalizing on seven walks in the frame. Grigsby and Brewer delivered RBI singles in the inning, while Grigsby brought home another run on a fielder's choice. Sullivan Smoak (Knoxville, Tenn.), Litsey, and Evans all drew bases-loaded walks in the inning to account for three more runs.
Ryan Akins picked up a two-run double in the ninth for Berea, but Litsey was able to shut the door on the Mountaineers by retiring the next two batters. Brett Vitkun (Williamsport, Md.), who worked a perfect eighth inning before the Colonels' rally, picked up the win on the mound.
The win brings Centre's record to 7-26 on the season, but allows the Colonels to go into this weekend's Southern Athletic Association on a hot streak. Berea falls to 10-24 on the season.
"We've won four of our last five," Pritchard added. "And we'll now go to Birmingham and see if we can surprise some people."
Centre enters the SAA Tournament as the No. 8 seed and will open play against regular season conference champion Birmingham-Southern at 5 p.m. on Friday.
