The Centre men's golf team finished play at the Emory Spring Invite at Barnsley Gardens G.C. in Blairsville, Ga. The Colonels had a much better day on Tuesday than Monday, but could not advance up the leaderboard, finishing tenth out of 13 teams.
Centre shot a combined team score of 308 on Tuesday, 14 shots better than their Monday score. The low man of the day and the entire tournament for the Colonels was freshman Andrew McKinney (Danville, Ky.), who fired a 1-under par round of 71 and tied for 11th place overall.
Sophomore Andrew Horn (Franklin, Tenn.) posted a score of 77 on Tuesday, followed by sophomore Carson Riley (Hendersonville, Tenn.) at 79. Sophomore Dakota Jarman (Danville, Ky.) and junior Bryan Griffin (Greensboro, N.C.) each shot scores of 81 to round out Centre's scoring on Tuesday.
"Although our play was far from stellar, the golf course conditions were extremely brutal," said head coach/director of golf Bruce Brown. "In the 22 years I've been a part of Centre College golf, Barnsley Gardens is one of the most difficult courses we have ever played. I was very proud of Andrew McKinney's performance. Taking this golf course under par is not an easy task."
"We got off to a rough start the first day at Barnsley Gardens, but after some practice we played better the second day," McKinney said. "It was good preparation for the upcoming conference tournament later this month and the team is looking forward to defending our title."
"This week had a different feel for everyone on the trip not having Grant (Blevins) with us. We wanted to make sure that we played our best because we know that he would expect nothing less than that. I know that I speak for everyone on the team when I say that we can't wait for him to be back out here with us."
The next tournament for the Centre men's golf team will be the SAA Championship at Old Fort G.C. in Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Colonels are the defending SAA tournament champions and also won the SAA Fall Preview at Old Fort in October.
