Box Score 2 DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreAthletics.com) – The Centre volleyball team competed in a tri-match in Alumni Gym on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Berry Vikings in straight sets and defeating the Covenant Scots in four sets to go 1-1 on the day.
Berry held a small lead throughout the first set, but the Colonels rallied to cut the deficit to 20-19. The Vikings would respond with the next three points in the set, eventually winning by a score of 25-21. In the second set, Berry used a 6-0 run midway through the second set to take control en route to a 25-14 win. The third set was the most competitive set of the contest as Centre got off to a 13-6 lead, but Berry would rally to take the lead at 20-19. The Colonels would tie the score at 23-all, but the Vikings would score the next two points to close out the match with a 25-23 win.
Beth Cecil (Bardstown, Ky.) paced the Colonels with 11 kills against Berry, followed by Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) with eight. Elizabeth Janszen (Cincinnati, Ohio) recorded a game high 28 assists. Erin McGrath (Louisville, Ky.) was Centre's team leader in digs with 14, followed by Elizabeth Janszen with ten digs.
Covenant led 18-13 late in the first set before Centre came back with a flurry, scoring 12 out of the next 13 points, including a pair of aces by Morgan Babey (LaGrange, Ky.) to win 25-18. In the second set, neither team led by more than three points until Covenant took a 23-19 lead. Once again the Colonels would rally, scoring the final six points of the set, the last coming on another ace by Babey, to win 25-23. In the third set, the Colonels would fight off two set points to tie the score at 24-24, but Covenant would score the next two points to take the set by a score of 26-24. Centre jumped out to an 11-5 lead early in the fourth set and would not lead by less than two points the rest of the way, winning 25-19 to close out the match.
Hailey Foote led the way for Centre with 15 kills against Covenant, followed by Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) with 13 and Beth Cecil with 11. Elizabeth Janszen poured in a game high 41 assists for the Colonels. Erin McGrath led Centre with 20 digs, followed by Beth Cecil with 11.
The Colonels will be back on action at noon on Sunday as the Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels come to Alumni Gym for a Southern Athletic Association matchup.
