Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Four Colonels scored in double-figures led by senior guard Alexis Guy's (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) career-high 30 points to lift the Centre women's basketball team to a dramatic three-overtime victory over visiting Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association matchup on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gymnasium.
It marked the first triple-overtime game for the Colonels since at least the 1991-92 season. Centre last went into two overtimes in a 68-64 loss to DePauw on Nov. 23, 2013.
With the win, Centre earns its third win in the last four games to improve to 4-10 overall and 2-1 in SAA play, while the Warriors drop to 11-3 and 2-1, respectively.
Late in the fourth quarter, with the score knotted at 45-45, Guy connected on a pair of free throws with eight seconds showing on the clock to give the Colonels a 47-45 lead.
After a Centre timeout, Hendrix's Heather Prowse made a layup with just two seconds to play in regulation to tie the game at 47-47. Sophomore guard Paige Kellam's (Hebron, Ky.) jumped was off the mark as time expired, sending the contest into a bonus period.
In overtime, neither team led by more than two points. Anna King knocked down two free throws to give the Warriors a slight 53-51 advantage with 1:30 remaining.
Kellam answered with a pair of free throws of her own with just under a minute to play, before she forced a Hendrix turnover on the next play and capitalized with a layup on the other end to regain a 55-53 lead with 31 ticks showing on the clock.
Hendrix's Sara Dyslin would make two free throws on the next Warriors possession to knot the game once again at 55-55 with 17 seconds to play.
Kellam's jumper in the closing seconds of the overtime period was off the mark, pushing the game into a second overtime.
In the second bonus period, Hendrix opened with a 7-3 to gain a 63-58 lead after a 3-pointer by Leah Smith with 1:26 to play.
A jumper by freshman forward Day Vance (Knoxville, Tenn.) and an old-fashioned 3-point play by Guy on the Colonels' next two possession would even the game once again at 63-63 with 29 seconds showing on the clock.
On the next play, Dyslin would capitalize on an old-fashioned 3-point play of her own to put the Warriors ahead 66-63 with 1.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime.
Centre would call a timeout and advance the ball near its own bench, when inbound passer Caroline Andreassen (Palm Harbor, Fla.) found Kellam at the top of the key, who knocked down the game-tying 3-pointer to send the contest into yet another bonus period with the score knotted at 66-66.
In the third overtime, a pair of Kellam free throws gave the Colonels a slim 74-73 lead with 33 seconds to play.
Just 10 seconds later, the Warriors responded with a jumper by Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler to regain a 75-74, before Kellam's jumper with just under nine ticks remaining pushed Centre on top 76-75.
Hendrix would have two chances, but Kriesel-Bigler's jumper and Dyslin's putback were both off the mark, giving the Colonels their second SAA victory of the season.
All told, the game saw 15 ties and 10 lead changes.
Guy's game-high 30 points also represent a career-high, topping her previous career-best of 24 markers set last season in a win over Rust. The Chagrin Falls, Ohio native made 14-of-17 free throws in the win, while tying a team-high with nine rebounds and recording three assists and three steals.
Kellam also scored a career-high with 19 points in the victory, connecting on 7-of-16 field goals, 1-of-3 shots from behind the arc and 4-of-4 from the free throw line. She also pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists.
Freshman forward Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) grabbed nine rebounds to go along with a game-high five blocked shots and six points.
Vance chipped in nine rebounds off the bench for the Colonels.
Dyslin paced the Warriors with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, followed by Kriesel-Bigler and King with 14 and 12 markers, respectively.
Centre finished 31.6 percent (24-of-76) from the field, including 26.7 percent (4-of-15) from downtown, while Hendrix shot 35.4 percent (23-of-65) on field goals and 36.4 (4-of-11) from long range.
Both teams shot well from the charity stripe, as the Colonels connected on 80.0 percent (24-of-30) of free throws and the Warriors were 83.3 percent (25-of-30) from the line.
Centre capitalized on Hendrix's 23 turnovers, leading to a 22-12 advantage in points off turnovers.
The win snapped a two-game skid against Hendrix for Centre.
The Colonels now have five days off before their next contest, when they travel to take on Sewanee in another SAA matchup on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 1 p.m. CT.
