Box Score MOUNT BERRY, Ga. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre women's basketball team used a 22-6 second half run to earn a 63-52 road victory at Berry in a Southern Athletic Association contest on Friday night at the Cage Center. The Colonels improve to 5-13 overall and 3-4 in SAA play, while the Vikings drop to 7-11 and 1-6, respectively.
Trailing 33-28 with 7:21 to play in the third quarter, Centre used a 22-6 surge keyed by nine points from senior guard Alexis Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) to gain its largest advantage of the night at 50-39 with 7:22 remaining in the game. Freshman forward Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) ignited the spurt with an old-fashioned 3-point play, before Guy capped the run with a jumper.
Berry responded with a 9-3 run to cut the Colonels' lead to 54-49 with just over a minute to play, but Centre outscored the Vikings 9-3 from that point on en route to the conference triumph.
Guy dropped in 19 points, connecting on 7-of-14 field goals, including 1-of-2 makes from behind the arc. She drained 4-of-7 free throws and pulled down a team-high seven boards.
Sophomore guard Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) chipped in 16 markers off the bench for the Colonels, making 4-of-7 field goals and 8-of-9 shots from the charity stripe. She added six rebounds, as well. Kellam was 6-of-7 from the free throw line in the final minute of the game.
Junior forward Michele Judy (Crittenden, Ky.) added eight points on 4-of-5 shooting for Centre.
Alex Weems led Berry with 11 markers off the bench, while Valerie McLure and Megan Casey each scored 10 points apiece for the Vikings. Casey grabbed a game-high eight rebounds for Berry.
The Colonels outshot the Vikings 44.9 percent (22-of-49) to 32.8 percent (20-of-61) from the field. Centre connected on 27.3 percent (3-of-11) of shots from long range and 69.6 percent (16-of-23) of attempts from the line.
Centre held a 41-34 rebounding advantage over Berry.
The Vikings would jump out to a 14-9 lead after the first period, before the Colonels scored 12 unanswered points to open the second quarter, gaining a 19-14 lead with 6:15 showing on the second quarter clock.
Berry responded with nine straight points to retake a 23-19 lead with 3:39 to play in the half, but Centre would outscore the Vikings 9-4 for the remainder of the second quarter to take a 28-27 advantage into the break. Senior guard Bonnie Rhule (Versailles, Ky.) knocked down a 3-pointer and freshman forward Madison Rice (Knoxville, Tenn.) made a jumper to close the half.
Berry scored six consecutive points to start the second half and gain a 33-28 lead before the Colonels' big run.
Centre caps a five-game string of road games with a matchup at Oglethorpe on Sunday afternoon. Tip-off is set for 1 PM at Dorough Field House.
