Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre volleyball team saw its four-match Southern Athletic Association winning streak come to an end at the Hangar Dome as the Colonels played in a tri-match at Millsaps. Centre lost to the Majors in straight sets, with all three sets going beyond 25 points.
The match between Centre and Millsaps was very closely contested, just like the first matchup of the season in Danville had been. Millsaps broke open a close opening set with a run of eight straight points to take a 24-18 lead. Centre, who had already come back from a 23-16 deficit against Millsaps earlier this season, responded with six points in a row to tie the score at 24-24 and extend the match, but the Majors stopped the momentum with the final two points to win 26-24.
The second set saw the lead change hands seven times, including five lead changes in the closing stretches. Centre fought off another set point at 24-23 and forced one of their own at 25-24, but Millsaps came up with a clutch kill for the tie and then scored two more points to close out the 27-25 second set victory.
In the final set, the lead once again changed hands numerous times with neither team gaining a significant edge. Millsaps forced the Colonels into a match point at 24-23 but Centre was able to extend the match into extra points. Millsaps quickly converted on an ace and then scored the final point of the match to win 26-24 just like in the opening set.
Junior Hailey Foote (Prospect, Ky.) paced the Colonels with ten kills against the Majors. Senior Shelby Foote (Prospect, Ky.) led Centre with 16 assists. Hailey Foote also recorded a team high 14 digs in the match, while senior Katherine Hagan (Whitesville, Ky.) added 13 digs.
The Centre volleyball team will be back in SAA road action on Sunday when they travel to Birmingham Southern.
