Fast Start Pushes Hendrix Past Centre, 73-55

CONWAY, Ark. (CentreColonels.com) – Hendrix scored the first 12 points and never looked back in a Southern Athletic Association matchup on Sunday afternoon, topping the Centre women's basketball team by a score of 73-55. The Colonels won the first meeting between the two teams in a thrilling 76-75 triple-overtime triumph on Jan. 10.

Centre drops to 5-18 overall and 3-9 in the SAA with the loss while the Warriors improve to 18-5 and 9-3, respectively.

Hendrix jumped out to a 19-7 lead after the first quarter, before the Colonels outscored the Warriors 15-14 in the second period, including nine points by senior guard Alexis Guy (Chagrin Falls, Ohio) to cut the Hendrix advantage to 33-22 at the half.

Hendrix then began the third quarter with a 15-3 surge to take a 48-25 lead midway through the third quarter, then pushing their advantage to as many as 29 points at 66-37 with just over eight minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

Centre answered with an 11-5 run capped by a pair of free throws by sophomore guard Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) to cut the Warriors' lead to 71-48 with 2:39 to play.

Hendrix responded with two free throws by Maddie Anderson, before the Colonels scored the final seven points of the game, including four by junior forward Olivia Alford (Louisville, Ky.) to shrink the final deficit to 73-55.

Guy scored a game-high 23 points on 8-of-16 shooting, including 1-of-4 makes from behind the arc. She also made 6-of-11 free throw attempts in the contest.

Kellam chipped in seven points off the bench, shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line to go with a team-high five rebounds.

Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler paced three Warriors in double-figures with 18 markers, connecting on 5-of-11 shots from the field and 6-of-10 free throws. Sara Dyslin added 13 points on 3-of-3 shooting and 7-of-10 makes from the charity stripe, while Madison Martin contributed 11 points off the bench for Hendrix. Dyslin also grabbed a game-high eight boards in the win.

Centre shot 33.3 percent (15-of-45) from the field and 75.0 percent (24-of-32) from the free throw line, while the Warriors shot 36.0 percent (18-of-50) on field goals, 33.3 percent (7-of-21) from behind the arc and 75.0 percent (30-of-40) from the charity stripe.

The Warriors outrebounded the Colonels 42-30, including a 16-8 edge in offensive rebounds leading to a 16-7 advantage in second chance points.

Centre outscored Hendrix in the paint 18-12.

The Colonels return home to take on Berry on Friday, Feb. 19 at 6 p.m. at Alumni Gymnasium.
