Colonels Open 2016 Campaign with 20-5 Rout of Calvin

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) –The Centre men's lacrosse team scored 20 goals for the first time since the 2014 season in a 20-5 triumph over visiting Calvin on Saturday afternoon in the Colonels' 2016 season opener. It marked the most goals that Centre has scored under second-year head coach Dan Sharbaugh.

The last time the Colonels scored at least 20 goals came in a 26-6 victory over Oglethorpe on April 5, 2014.

Senior attack Joe Lecewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio) paced the Centre offense with six goals to go along with an assist, two ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Brothers Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) and Leland Gray (Louisville, Ky.) each scored three goals in contest. Seth tallied three assists and a team-high six ground balls, while Leland dished out two assists to go with three ground balls.

Sophomore attack Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and junior midfielder Lorenzo Powell (Newcastle, Wash.) netted two goals apiece, while Peluso chipped in four ground balls.

Senior midfielder Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.), senior attack Conor Bennett (Alpharetta, Ga.), senior attack Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.) and sophomore attack Austin Glang (Fayetteville, Ga.) also each contributed a goal for the Colonels. Bennett also posted a pair of assists in the victory.

Hughes got Centre on the board just over a minute into the game to give the Colonels an early 1-0 lead.

Later in the quarter, Calvin netted the equalizer, before Centre would answer with three straight goals, two coming from Peluso to gain a 4-1 advantage. The Knights scored another goal late in the quarter to shrink the deficit to two goals after the first period of action.

The Colonels widened its lead in the second quarter, netting seven of the eight goals scored in the period, including four from Lencewicz to go ahead by a score of 11-3 at the break.

Calvin added a goal early in the third quarter, before Centre closed the stanza with four scores, two coming from Seth Gray to take a 15-4 lead after three.

The Colonels would outscore the Knights 5-1 in the final quarter as Leland Gray found the back of the net twice, helping Centre earn the 15-goal victory to open the season.

The Colonels finished with advantages of 69-14 in shots, 41-28 in ground balls and 19-8 in face off wins. Centre was 26-of-28 (92.9 percent) on clears in the win, as well.

Centre returns to action on Wednesday, Feb. 24 traveling to Brighton, Mich. to take on Trine in a non-conference matchup at 2 p.m.
