Box Score 2 DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre softball team earned a split on day one of the Centre College Classic on Saturday, topping Adrian 2-0 before dropping a 4-3 decision to Manchester in game two of the day. The Colonels moved to 5-7 on the season with the split.
Sophomore pitcher Erika Brewer (Frenchburg, Ky.) tossed a two-hit shutout in Centre's win over Adrian, fanning eight hitters while walking three.
The Colonels jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning when sophomore left fielder Madison DeBord (Danville, Ky.) singled to right field, scoring freshman designated player Cassidy Cook (Louisville, Ky.).
Centre extended its advantage to 2-0 in the sixth frame when senior catcher Tori Silcox (Crestwood, Ky.) singled through the right side, plating sophomore second baseman Ellen Stephens (Louisville, Ky.).
Junior first baseman Jessika Young (Leitchfield, Ky.) finished 2-for-3 at the plate with a double for the Colonels, while Silcox and DeBord were each 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Colonels.
In the second game of the day, Manchester took a 2-0 lead when Kate Skeens hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning.
Stephens responded by belting a three-run home run for Centre in the top of the third frame, giving the Colonels a 3-2 advantage.
The Spartans would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to earn the come-from-behind victory over the hosts.
Stephens was 2-for-4 at the plate with with three RBI and a run scored, while DeBord was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with a run scored. Young finished 2-for-4 at the plate for her second multi-hit game of the day.
The Colonels return to action tomorrow, Sunday, March 13 on day two of the Centre College Classic hosting Adrian at 9 a.m. and Manchester at 1 p.m.
