Centre Wins 12-Inning Thriller to Cap Doubleheader Sweep of Berry

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – Freshman center fielder Wesley Jorette's (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) RBI single to center field in the bottom of the 12th inning of a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest on Saturday evening gave the Centre baseball team a 6-5 win and secured a doubleheader sweep for the Colonels over visiting Berry at Gary Wright Field.

Centre won the first game by a score of 10-6. The Colonels boosted their record to 12-8 overall and 3-5 in SAA action with the pair of wins, while the Vikings drop to 16-8 on the season and 3-5 in the conference.

In game two, after Berry got on the board first with a run in the first inning, Centre gained a 3-1 advantage in the bottom of the second inning when senior catcher Zach Montgomery (Louisville, Ky.) and freshman shortstop Brahm Whittinghill (Sellersburg, Ind.) each singled to drive in runs, before Whittinghill scored on a Viking error.

Berry would take a 4-3 lead with a pair of runs in the third and another score in the fifth, before a single by junior left fielder Alex Richardson (Mount Washington, Ky.) scored Jorette in the bottom of the fifth frame to knot the game at 4-4.

The Colonels took a 5-4 lead in the sixth inning when Montgomery singled, plating junior third baseman Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) on the play.

With the Vikings down to their final out, Slade Dale's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the seventh inning tied the game at 5-5 and eventually forced extra innings.

Neither team was able to plate a run until the bottom of the 12th inning, when Jorette's single to center field scored Montgomery from second base to clinch the victory for Centre. Montgomery got the inning started with a walk before stealing second base.

Jorette finished 3-of-6 at the plate with a double, RBI and a run scored. Montgomery was 2-for-3 with two RBI, two runs, a walk and two stolen bases while Richardson was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a stolen base.

Freshman Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) earned the win for the Colonels after tossing five innings of scoreless relief, allowing just three hits with six strikeouts and three walks.

Senior pitcher Rob Caudill (Danville, Ky.) started on the hill for Centre, working 4.1 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits, fanning six batters and walking two.

In the early game, the Colonels would jump out to a 6-0 lead through the first four innings, keyed by a home run by junior first baseman Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.) and a Schacht RBI single.

The Vikings got a run back in the fifth inning, before Centre pushed their lead to 10-1 in the sixth inning with three more runs. Richardson doubled to bring home junior second baseman Grant Herald (Lexington, Ky.), Evans' two-run double plated Richardson and Schacht, followed by an RBI single by freshman designated hitter Justin DiFilippo (Jacksonville, Fla.).

Berry would chip away at the Colonels' lead with five runs in the eighth inning, but Centre was able to hold on for the 10-6 victory.

Schacht matched a team-high with three hits in five at-bats for the Colonels with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, while freshman third baseman Jacob Crouch (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) was 3-for-4 with a run scored for Centre. Evans was 2-for-5 at the plate with three RBI, a double and a run scored. Richardson was also 2-for-5 for Centre with two RBI and a double, while Jorette finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a double and a walk. Herald went 2-for-4 with a run scored, as well.

The Colonels tallied a season-high 15 hits, the most for Centre since posting 15 hits at Thomas More on April 9, 2014.

Senior pitcher Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) picked up on the win on the mound for Centre, hurling six innings and allowing one run on eight hits with one strikeout.

The Colonels will look for the season sweep of the Vikings on Sunday afternoon, hosting Berry at Gary Wright Field. The game is slated to begin at 12 p.m.
