Box Score DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team saw its four-game winning streak snap at the hands of local rival Transylvania on Wednesday night at Gary Wright Field, as the visiting Pioneers scored two ninth inning runs to defeat the Colonels 4-2.
Centre fell to 7-2 with the loss, while Transylvania evened its record at 2-2 on the season.
The Pioneers got on the board first in the top of the second inning when Blake Hart's single plated a pair of runs to give Transylvania at 2-0 lead.
Junior left fielder Alex Richardson's (Mount Washington, Ky.) RBI single to center field in the bottom of the third frame would cut the Pioneers' advantage to 2-1. Junior second baseman Grant Herald (Lexington, Ky.) crossed the plate on the play.
With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, junior designated hitter Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.) reached on an error by Transylvania's right fielder, scoring freshman center fielder Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) to knot the game at 2-2.
The Pioneers would score a pair of runs in the top of the ninth inning Hunter Jones' two-run single through the right side, gaining a 4-2 lead that would prove to be the final margin.
Richardson finished 1-for-4 with a run batted in for the Colonels, while Evans also went 1-for-4 at the plate for Centre.
Junior pitcher Alex Edwards (Goshen, Ohio) suffered the loss for the Colonels, allowing two runs on one hit with a strikeout and three walks in an inning of work.
Freshman pitcher Nick Hoffman (Louisville, Ky.) made the start for Centre, tossing four innings and allowing two unearned runs on two hits with two strikeouts and four walks.
Freshman pitchers Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) and Aaryn Chandler (St. John, Ind.) combined for four innings of scoreless relief for the Colonels.
Centre opens Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play this weekend traveling to Birmingham Southern for a three-game series against the Panthers. The first game is set for Saturday, March 5 at 12 p.m. CT.
