(CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's lacrosse team closed the 2016 regular season with a 13-5 triumph over Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchup at Farris Stadium on Sunday. The eight members of the class of 2016 earned the win in their final game in Danville, capping their careers with a home record of 22-6.
Centre improved to 10-4 overall and 6-1 in SAA play, while the Warriors dropped to 6-10 on the season with a 2-5 mark in conference action.
The Colonel seniors contributed in a big way in the victory, combining for 10 goals, five assists, 13 ground balls and eight caused turnovers in the win.
With the score knotted at 4-4 late in the second quarter, Centre would score the next nine goals of the contest.
The Colonels closed the half with three straight goals to gain a 7-4 advantage heading into halftime. Senior attackman Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) found the back of the net with 1:31 remaining in the period, before fellow senior attackman Joe Lencewicz (Gates Mills, Ohio) netted two goals in the final minute of the half.
Senior attackman Conor Bennett (Alpharetta, Ga.) scored the first goal of the third quarter, followed by goals by sophomore attackman Dominic Peluso (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Lencewicz each on assists by Gray. Senior attackman Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) recorded a goal on an assist by junior attackman Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) to push the Centre lead to 11-4 in the third quarter.
Lencewicz found Bennett for his second goal of the day with just over six minutes to play in the fourth quarter, before Gray completed the hat-trick with a goal off the assist by senior defender John Coogan (Nashville, Tenn.) just 22 seconds later.
Gray finished with three goals, three assists and a pair of ground balls, while Lencewicz also posted a hat-trick to go along with an assist. Bennett, Peluso and Hughes each tallied two goals in the win.
Senior defender Clay Krill (Louisville, Ky.) recorded three ground balls and two caused turnovers, senior long stick midfielder Phil Havira (Louisville, Ky.) had three caused turnovers and senior attackman Dustin Cowell (Culver, Ind.) finished with a pair of ground balls for the Colonels.
Sophomore goaltender Samuel Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) posted nine saves in the victory for Centre.
The Colonels have a bye in the first round of the SAA tournament and will return to action on Friday, April 22 taking on the highest remaining seed in the SAA semifinals in Sewanee, Tenn.
