Centre Baseball Bested in SAA Twinbill at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team dropped a pair of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchups at Hendrix by scores of 10-2 and 2-1 on Saturday afternoon at Warrior Field. The Colonels drop to 15-16 overall and 4-10 in SAA play, while the Warriors boost their records to 17-12 on the season and 11-3 in the conference.

In the early game, Hendrix held a slim 2-0 lead after three innings before the host plated four runs in the fourth frame to gain a 6-0 advantage. Centre would get on the board in the fifth inning when freshman center fielder Wesley Jorette's (Lawrenceburg, Ky.) sacrifice fly to left field scored junior shortstop Grant Herald (Lexington, Ky.) on the play.

After the Warriors countered with a run in the bottom of the inning, Jorette drove in another run on a sacrifice fly, this time to center field in the top of the eighth, scoring freshman shortstop Brahm Whittinghill (Sellersburg, Ind.).

Hendrix answered with three more runs in the bottom of the stanza to go ahead by a score of 10-2.

Freshman right fielder Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) led the Colonels with two hits in three at-bats, while Jorette drove in both of Centre's runs. Whittinghill finished 1-for-3 in the game and Herald was 1-for-2 at the plate.

Tanner Cooper paced the Warrior offense going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI and a run scored.

Junior pitcher Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) was saddled with the loss for the Colonels, allowing six earned runs on 12 hits in seven innings of work with four strikeouts and just one walk. Daniel Imbro improved to 5-3 on the hill for Hendrix with the win, scattering two runs and five hits acrosse eight innings of work to go with eight strikeouts and a walk.

In the nightcap, neither team was able to gain any ground until the bottom of the fourth inning, when the Warriors manufactured a run to gain a 1-0 advantage when Cooper scored on a groundout after reaching on an error to lead off the inning.

Hendrix extended its lead to 2-0 in the fifth inning when Wyatt Hogan's RBI single to right center field scored Jorge Leon.

In the top of the seventh inning, the Colonels loaded the bases with no outs as Brewer and Goodwin walked followed by a bunt single by Whittinghill. After a strikeout, Schacht's groundout in the next at-bat drove in a run to cut the Warriors' advantage in half at 2-1.

However, Hendrix was able to strand a pair of Centre runners in scoring position to hang on for the one-run SAA triumph.

Junior second baseman Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) went 2-for-3 in the contest, while senior catcher Zach Montgomery (Louisville, Ky.) was 2-for-4 at the plate.

Hogan finished 1-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Warriors.

Senior pitcher Rob Caudill (Danville, Ky.) suffered the loss despite a strong outing. He fell to 2-2 after tossing six innings and allowing one two runs (one earned) on six hits with a strikeout and a pair of walks. He forced eight fly outs and seven ground outs without allowing a single extra base hit. Will Nichol moved to 4-2 on the season with the victory on the hill for Hendrix, hurling a complete game and allowing a run on six hits with three strikeouts and four walks.

The Colonels and Warriors meet in the third and final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. CT.
