Box Score LEXINGTON, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre men's lacrosse team held a 3-1 fourth quarter lead over host Transylvania, before the Pioneers scored four unanswered goals in the final period to close out a 5-3 victory in a non-conference game on Tuesday night at the Transylvania Athletics Complex.
The Colonels saw their four-game winning streak snap at the hands of Transylvania, as Centre moved to 8-4 on the season. The Pioneers improved to 4-6 on the year.
Offense was at a premium in the first half, as Transylvania took a 1-0 lead into the break. Ben Irwin put the Pioneers on the board with a goal with 2:31 showing on the first quarter clock.
Junior midfielder Austin Zehnder (Prospect, Ky.) evened the score at 1-1 early in the second half, finding the top left corner of the net with 10:06 to play in the third quarter.
Later in the period, senior attackman Seth Gray (Louisville, Ky.) gave the Colonels their first lead of the game at 2-1 with a goal off the feed from his brother, freshman attackman Leland Gray (Louisville, Ky.) with 28 seconds showing on the third quarter clock.
Centre would extend its lead to 3-1 when senior attackman Matt Hughes (Vero Beach, Fla.) beat Transylvania goalkeeper Cooper Fogle at the 9:46 mark of the final period.
The Pioneers answered with two quick goals, the second coming with 8:24 remaining in the contest. Ben Erwin scored the first goal, before Zack Riggs netted the equalizer just moments later.
Transylvania's Evan Wright found the back of the net to give the Pioneers the lead just over four minutes later. Riggs would then score his second goal of the night to push the Transylvania lead to two goals at 5-3 with just under three minutes showing on the game clock.
Junior defender Connor Thuss (Ridgefield, Conn.) finished with team-highs of three ground balls and three caused turnovers for the Colonels. Centre sophomore goaltender Samuel Long (Cincinnati, Ohio) made 17 saves in the game, a save percentage of 77.3 percent on the night.
Riggs paced the Pioneers with two goals and three ground balls. Fogle recorded nine saves in net in the victory for Transylvania.
The Pioneers held advantages of 37-32 in shots and 26-14 in ground balls. The Colonels were nearly perfect on clears at 95.4 percent (21-of-22) in the contest.
Centre killed seven penalties totaling five minutes and thirty seconds, compared to Transylvania's two infractions worth one minute and thirty seconds.
The Colonels close the regular season with a pair of Southern Athletic Association (SAA) matchups at Farris Stadium this weekend, hosting Rhodes on Friday, April 8 at 7 p.m. before battling Hendrix on Sunday, April 10 at 12 p.m.
