No. 5 Colonels Win W&L Classic with 1-0 Victory over Bridgewater (Va.)

Box Score

LEXINGTON, Va. (CentreColonels.com) – Freshman forward Meghan Paynter's (Danville, Ky.) first career goal proved to be the difference in the fifth-ranked Centre women's soccer team's 1-0 triumph over Bridgewater (Va.) on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the Washington & Lee Classic at Watt Field.

With the win, the Colonels improved to 6-0-0 on the season for the second straight year while the Eagles suffered their first loss of the season, dropping to 4-1-0.

After a scoreless first half, senior forward Destinie Graves (Lexington, Ky.) found Paynter in the 60th minute of action for the game's only score.

Bridgewater would put plenty of pressure on the Centre defense and senior goalkeeper Olivia Alford (Louisville, Ky.), as the Eagles tallied nine shots in the second half. Alford made three of her seven saves following the Colonels' goal, preserving Centre's 1-0 advantage.

Alford and the Colonels now have five shutouts on the season as Centre is outscoring opponents 11-1 on the year.

Bridgewater held advantages of 12-3 in shots and 8-3 in corner kicks in the losing effort. The stingy Eagles defense came into the game allowing just two goals and 11 shots on goal through their first four contests.

Centre's three shots were its fewest since registering three shots against Emory in the 2011 NCAA Tournament Second Round.

The Colonels are back in action on Wednesday, Sept. 14 traveling to Wittenberg for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m.
