Colonels Pull Away for 7-1 Triumph over Berea

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. (CentreColonels.com) – The Centre baseball team used a three-run sixth inning while the Colonel pitching staff limited visiting Berea to just five base hits en route to a 7-1 victory over the Mountaineers on Wednesday night at Gary Wright Field. Centre snaps a seven-game skid with the win, improving to 15-15 on the season while Berea falls to 10-20 on the year.

After being held to one hit through the first four frames of action, the Colonels got on the board in the fifth inning when freshman third baseman Matt LaPoint (Freeport, Maine) walked with the bases loaded.
Centre added to its lead in the sixth stanza, as senior designated hitter Trevor Brewer (Bowling Green, Ky.) got things rolling with an RBI single through the right side, scoring sophomore right fielder Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) on the play.
Freshman shortstop Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.) would lay down a safety squeeze, plating senior left fielder Alex Richardson (Mt. Washington, Ky.), followed by an RBI double to left field by senior second baseman Andrew Olson (Louisville, Ky.) which scored freshman Daniel Brown (Sonoma, Calif.) and gave Centre a 4-0 lead.
Senior first baseman Greyson Evans (Kernersville, N.C.) extended the Colonels' advantage in the seventh inning with an RBI single to right field before later scoring on a wild pitch to put Centre ahead 6-0.
Berea got on the board in the eighth on a wild pitch, but the Colonels would answer in the home half of the inning when sophomore catcher Justin DiFilippo (Jacksonville, Fla.) crossed the plate on a dropped third strike by the Mountaineers.
Olson paced Centre at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, while Schacht went 1-for-3 with pair of runs scored and a walk.
Senior pitcher Lucas McAvoy (Lexington, Ky.) picked up his first career win on the mound for the Colonels in the contest. The southpaw hurled one inning of scoreless relief for Centre, allowing one hit.
Griffen Morris was tagged with the loss for Berea, allowing four runs on four hits with three strikeouts and three walks in 5 2/3 innings of work.
The Colonels return to action on Friday with the first of three games against Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Sewanee. First pitch is slated for noon ET at Gary Wright Field.
