Centre, Oglethorpe draw 1-1 in SAA opener

Box Score

Man of the Match - Bailey Spade

ATLANTA – Centre men's soccer battled to a 1-1 draw Friday night at Oglethorpe in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opener.

In a rematch of the 2016 conference tournament semifinal, the Colonels (4-3-1, 0-0-1 SAA) and Stormy Petrels (4-2-1, 0-0-1) went toe-to-toe for a full 110 minutes at Oglethorpe Field.

After nearly a half of nil-nil soccer, Jesse DiLuzio (North Woodmere, N.Y.) put the Colonels on the board with a score off of a Noah Wesley-Chevalier (Cincinnati) assist in the 44th minute. It was DiLuzio's third of a season, tied with two others for the team high.

The senior defender's goal nearly stood as the game-winner, but the Stormy Petrels scored a late goal of their own in the second period. Devon Patterson netted the equalizer in the 87th minute, forcing extra time for the teams' second regular season meeting in a row.

Centre got off just one shot in the two extra time periods, compared to Oglethorpe's four, but neither side could net the golden goal.

The host Petrels out-shot the Colonels 20-13 for the entire match, but the shots-on-goal (6 to 4) were much closer.

Junior Bailey Spade (Frankfort, Ky.) finished with a season-best five saves in-goal for the Colonels. Spade and the Centre defense held its opponent to one or fewer goals for the sixth time in eight matches.

The Colonels continue conference play next Friday, traveling to face the Berry Vikings in Mount Berry, Ga., for a 7 p.m. ET kick.
