Centre stifles Berry on Pink Night

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's basketball took the motto of their annual Pink Night game to heart Friday evening, routing Southern Athletic Association (SAA) foe Berry College, 62-40, inside Alumni Gymnasium.

This year's slogan, "Defend the Rack," could not have been more appropriate for the Colonels (14-8, 4-7 SAA), who held the Vikings (10-12, 5-7) to their second-lowest point total of the season and just 27 percent shooting as a team.

Centre clamped down early, holding Berry to just 2-for-15 from the floor in the first quarter to grab a 13-5 lead after 10 minutes.

The Vikings would hit the Colonels with a strong run to start the second quarter, rallying to regain their first lead since the opening bucket of the game, 19-17.

Centre settled in, however, and answered with its own impressive stretch prior to the half. Junior Abigail Stewart (LaGrange, Ky.) powered the run, scoring 10 points in the second period as the Colonels carried a 31-23 lead into the half.

After surrendering 18 points in the second quarter, the Colonels allowed only 17 in the entire second half.

The Colonels outscored Berry 15-6 in the third quarter, as senior Paige Kellam (Hebron, Ky.) led the charge with seven points as Centre's lead swelled.

Berry wouldn't threaten in the fourth quarter, as the Colonels closed out the victory to improve to 8-1 at home.

Senior Olivia Schad (Cincinnati) hit all four of her 3-point tries and led the Colonels with 13 points, adding a pair of assists and a couple of rebounds.

Stewart totaled 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks in a stout defensive effort, and junior Cheyenne Bunner (Mars Hill, N.C.) led Centre with 10 rebounds – including four offensive – chipping in nine points in 15 minutes off the bench.

As a team, Centre shot 40 percent overall (19-47) and from the 3-point line (8-20), outrebounding Berry 41 to 34 while finishing with 13 assists. The Colonels also scored 13 points off of 13 Viking turnovers.

Centre faces SAA-leading Oglethorpe Sunday at 1 p.m. ET inside Alumni Gymnasium.
