Colonels falter against Carthage, 13-8

DANVILLE, Ky. - The Centre men's lacrosse team fell to Carthage, 13-8, Saturday afternoon at Farris Stadium, never able to catch up following a big second quarter from the Red Men.

With the loss, the Colonels fall to 3-3 on the year while the Red Men improve to 6-1.

The Colonels and Red Men remained scoreless early on the in the contest, but Andy Szun gave Carthage an early 1-0 advantage at the six-minute mark.

Just thirty seconds later, sophomore John Morrison (Franklin, Tenn.) tied the game at one, finding the back of the net off of a feed from fellow sophomore Dominic Nayan (Memphis, Tenn.).

Szun would tally his second goal on the contest nearly two minutes later, giving the Red Men a 2-1 lead.

Centre took back the lead with back-to-back goals from freshmen Jack Shannon (Palisades, N.Y.) and Anthony DiMichele (Cincinnati, Ohio) just before the end of the quarter.

Trailing 3-2, Carthage strung off seven straight goals in the second quarter. Ethan Flight led the Red Men with a hat trick in the frame. Brody Ilstrup and Szun also added a pair goals apiece before the half.

The Red Men continued to dominate the Colonels in the third, striking for four goals in the quarter. Illstrup added another goal to his stellar performance 15 seconds into the frame.

Shannon got Centre back on the board at the 11-minute mark, as Nayan assisted on the play. Sophomore Noah Hull (Decatur, Ga.) followed suit closely after, cutting the Carthage lead to 10-5.

In the final 10 minutes of the third quarter Carthage rattled off three consecutive goals, taking a commanding 13-5 lead. Szun tallied his fifth goal of the game, Flight added his fourth, and Matt Curran recorded his first.

The Colonels shutout the Red Men in the final quarter of play, finishing the game strong with three straight goals. DiMichele added his second goal of the contest at the 10-minute mark. Freshman Nolan Irey (Raleigh, N.C.) assisted on the play.

Classmate Padraic Dermody (Louisville, Ky.) registered two more goals in the frame, cutting Carthage's lead to 13-8.

In the loss, Shannon led the Colonels with two goals and five ground balls.

Centre will be back in action next Sunday for a 2 p.m. ET start at Birmingham Southern.
