Shorthanded Colonels suffer 9-0 defeat at No. 36 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Centre men's tennis began its spring break swing in Virginia against a tough Christopher Newport squad Saturday, falling 9-0 to the 36th-ranked Captains.

The Colonels, missing a couple of regulars from their lineup, slip to 3-6 overall this season, while CNU moves to 5-6 with the win.

CNU controlled the match by sweeping all three doubles matches, including an 8-3 decision at No. 1 where David Reed and Justin Cerny defeated Centre's Matthew Ko (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Josh Joiner (Danville, Ky.).

The Captains would take all six singles bouts in straight sets to claim the team victory.

Max Middleton (Atlanta) battled with Reed at No. 1 singles, but ultimately fell to the 36th-ranked singles player in Division III by a 6-1, 6-2 score.

Adam Slone (Lexington, Ky.) won a handful of games at No. 2 singles against Cerny, falling 6-2, 6-2, and Joiner put together a strong second set in a 6-0, 6-4 loss at No. 5 to Dominic Lacombe.

Centre continues its East Coast trip Tuesday, traveling to face Randolph at 3 p.m. ET.
