Stallings picks up singles win, Colonels fall at No. 26 CNU

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Centre women's tennis opened their week-long trip in Virginia Sunday, falling 8-1 at No. 26 Christopher Newport.

The Colonels fall to 4-7 with the loss, while the Captains move to 6-3 with their fifth straight victory.

Centre's lone point came in No. 3 singles, where rookie Caroline Stallings (Clarksville, Md.) defeated CNU's Kate Huck in a tough three-setter. Stallings won the opening set, 6-2, but was swept in a 6-0 defeat in set two. She rallied to win the third, 6-4.

At No. 1 singles, Abigail Kent (College Station, Texas) battled with Johanna Ranta-aho, the nation's 49th-ranked singles player, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 7-5.

Senior Aliza Williams (Cincinnati) nearly came back to knock off McKinney Hardwood in No. 2 singles, but would drop a 6-4, 6-7(6), 1-0 (10-8) decision.

CNU swept the three doubles matches, as Kent and Williams, and Stallings and Emily Zelichenok (Louisville, Ky.) won four games at Nos. 1 and 2, respectively.

The Colonels resume action Tuesday, traveling to face Randolph at 3 p.m. ET.
