Colonel men banked by regionally-ranked Panthers

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre men's tennis suffered a 5-0 setback Saturday against Birmingham Southern in Southern Athletic Association action on the Colonels' outdoor courts.

The Colonels (4-9, 0-3 SAA) couldn't keep up with the Panthers (7-7, 1-2), who entered as a top 20 team in the Atlantic South Region.

Birmingham Southern swept the doubles matches to jump out to a commanding 3-0 advantage.

Centre's closest doubles battle came at No. 2, where Matthew Ko (Nicholasville, Ky.) and Josh Joiner (Danville, Ky.) were edged by Alex Wisener and Lee Thompson, 8-6.

Wisener bested Joiner in No. 6 singles for the Panthers' fourth point, and regionally-ranked Jacob Weinacker defeated Arpit Maini (Spartanburg, S.C.) 6-4, 6-1 on court one to seal the team victory.

Ko, Adam Slone (Lexington, Ky.) and Josh Hadlock (Okemos, Mich.) each had a set in hand on their respective singles courts before the match was ended at decision.

Centre wraps up the regular season with four straight on the road, beginning next weekend at Rhodes (April 7) and Hendrix (April 8).
