Vikings take Saturday doubleheader, series from Colonels

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DANVILLE, Ky. –Centre baseball's struggles continued Saturday against a hot-hitting Berry squad, as the visiting Vikings took two games at Gary Wright Field to secure the series sweep.

The Colonels fall to 12-14 overall and 4-8 in the Southern Athletic Association, while Berry moves to 20-8 (11-4 SAA).

GAME ONE: Berry 14, Centre 4

As they did in the series opener, the Vikings jumped on the board early with a trio of runs in the first inning.

Centre would take its first lead of the series in the second, though, scoring four runs on RBIs from Quinn Andrews (Chicago), Will Kirk (Morgantown, N.C.), Casey Klein (Louisville, Ky.) and Parker Selin (Lexington, Ky.).

Starter Sam Shelley (Lexington, Ky.) settled in after the first, and would keep Berry off the board over the next four frames.

The Vikings weren't held in check for too long, however, as they regained the lead after putting up three more in the top of the sixth off reliever Hogan Brownley (Louisville, Ky.).

The wheels officially fell off in the eighth, as Berry scored eight runs on four hits and three Colonel errors to make it 14-4.

Berry reliever William Gibbons threw five innings and stifled Centre's bats, allowing only four hits while fanning five batters.

Chris Esselman (Louisville, Ky.) paced the Colonels at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a run scored in the loss.

GAME TWO: Berry 2, Centre 1

The series finale was a much closer affair, as Esselman and Drew Schacht (Lexington, Ky.) combined to keep Berry's lineup relatively at bay.

Combined, the pair allowed seven hits to perhaps the SAA's best all-around offense. Berry entered the weekend leading the league in hits, batting average, doubles and triples.

Berry broke a scoreless tie in the third, as Casey Whitaker drove in a run with a RBI double.

The Vikings made it 2-0 with some heads-up base-running from Tyler Calvert in the fourth.

Centre's lone run came in the sixth, as Klein smacked a solo homerun to bring the Colonels within 2-1.

Spence Johns took over on the mound after the homer and got the next six outs to earn a save and clinch the series sweep.

Tyler Tucker (Louisville, Ky.) and Schacht each tallied multiple hits for the Colonels in the defeat.

Centre returns to Gary Wright Field Monday, April 2, facing in-state rival Transylvania at 6 p.m. ET.
