Colonels vanquish Lady Reds for fourth consecutive victory

Box Score

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre women's lacrosse continues to roll through opponents, defeating visiting Carthage by a 19-7 score at South Turf Field under frigid conditions Thursday evening.

The Colonels improve to 4-1 overall with their fourth consecutive win by double figures, while the Lady Reds slip to 4-2.

Centre senior Haden Gibbons (Chattanooga, Tenn.) netted the game's first goal, taking advantage of a free position just three minutes into the contest.

Classmate Colleen Jackson (Gaithersburg, Md.) followed with an unassisted tally less than two minutes later to make it 2-0.

Carthage held its own throughout much of the first half, and got its first goal on a free position shot near the 24:30 mark.

Jackson assisted on a goal from freshman Mary Katherine Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) roughly seven minutes later, giving Centre a 3-1 edge it held until Carthage pulled within 3-2 with 10 minutes left in the half.

Gibbons won the ensuing draw control, and promptly scored to push the lead back to a pair.

That goal was the first in a 7-2 stretch for the Colonels to end the half, which was capped by a pair of magnificent scores in the waning seconds.

After the Lady Reds trimmed the deficit to 8-4 with 23 seconds left, reigning SAA Offensive Player of the Week Hannah Bellamah (Loveland, Ohio) netted a goal with only 11 seconds remaining.

She then grabbed the next draw control, and fed freshman Bella Tacogue (Louisville, Ky.) for a buzzer-beating goal as time expired, making it 10-4 at the half.

Carthage scored two of the first three goals in the second half, but the Colonels would out-score their guests 7-1 the rest of the way, putting the game well out of reach.

Gibbons paced Centre with five goals on seven shots, also co-leading the team with seven ground balls and five caused turnovers. She's now scored three or more points in every game this season.

Bellamah matched Gibbons with six points on four scores and a pair of assists, including a highlight-worthy feed to Hannah Hardy (Louisville, Ky.) in the second half. She also had eight draw controls.

Hannah Hardy finished with two goals and as many assists, while the younger Hardy had seven ground balls, five draw controls and five caused turnovers to go with her goal.

Tacogue netted four goals for the second game in a row.

Senior Natalie Marek (Louisville, Ky.) turned aside a season-high 11 shots, finishing with a 61.1% save percentage.

As a team, the Colonels won 18 of 27 draw controls, successfully cleared 17 of 18 attempts and totaled 31 ground balls to Carthage's 20.

The Colonels have one day off before returning to action at South Turf Field, hosting Illinois Wesleyan at 1 p.m. ET.
