ATLANTA – Centre women's tennis put together a solid overall weekend at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships for the Atlantic South, hosted by Emory.
In the main doubles bracket, each of Centre's four duos won their opening round matches.
Neha Rao and
Hannah Doherty reached the quarterfinals with consecutive wins in first and second rounds. They defeated Sewanee's Lilly Stephens and Haley Tucker, 8-4, before handing teammates
Caroline Lancaster and
Grace Headley an 8-2 loss in the all-Centre second round meeting.
Lancaster and Headley won their opening round match over Belhaven's Julia Keffer and Macey Lee, 8-4.
Katharine Sherman and
Abigail Kent paired up to defeat Oglethorpe's Hannah Dattilo and Shannon Cruz, 8-1, before falling to the top-seeded duo out of Emory.
Elsewhere in the draw,
Emily Zelichenok and
Caroline Stallings opened with an 8-6 victory over Sewanee's Maura McCrary and Taylor Sprouse. They would also fall out in the following round.
In Flight B doubles,
Kenny Snow and
Grace English fell in the opening round in a close 8-6 match against Piedmont's Crysalin Gloria and Haley Oleson. The two rebounded with an 8-5 victory in the consolation draw against Rhodes' Finn and Mia Mullen.
The rookie Sherman, seeded fifth in the primary bracket, lasted into the Round of 16 to lead all Colonels in singles action. She claimed a 7-6(7), 6-4 victory over Rhodes' Michelle Adan-Pol, but ultimately fell to Emory's Emma Cartledge in straight sets.
Zelichenok began singles with a 6-3, 6-2 win against Julia Darkey of Rhodes, but fell to the bracket's two-seed in Emory's Daniela Lopez – ranked in the top 30 in NCAA Division III last season.
Similarly, Stallings advanced through her opening round match before dropping out in the second against the third-seeded Milena Amedieva of North Carolina Wesleyan.
Rao started singles action with a strong 6-0, 6-0 decision over Sewanee's Morgan Downing, but fell to Emory's Defne Olcay in round two.
Her doubles partner, Doherty, won 6-2, 6-3 over Sewanee's McCrary in singles play, but also fell in the second round.
Elsewhere in the main draw, Kent, Lancaster and Headley each suffered opening-round defeats. Kent would bounce back with multiple consolation wins, however, defeating Downing, 6-1, 6-2, and Oglethorpe's Shannon Cruz, 6-4, 6-0.
English was Centre's lone representative in Flight B singles, dropping both of her matches.
Likewise, Snow was the only Colonels in Flight C singles. Although she dropped her first round match in three sets, she went on to win the consolation bracket with three straight victories. She defeated Belhaven's Emilie Ferguson, 6-0, 6-0, and Rhodes' Caroline Yarbrough, 6-4, 6-0. In the draw's finale, she rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 win against Rhodes' Tricia Sculco.
The Colonels' final competition of the fall will be a dual match meeting against Thomas More Oct. 14 at the Centre Tennis Courts.
