DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre baseball claimed a walk-off victory Monday evening, winning by a 3-2 score against visiting Mt. St. Joseph at Gary Wright Field.
Seth Hagan provided the game-clinching score in the bottom of the ninth, coming around to score after a bunt from teammate
Cole Hilt and subsequent miscue from the Lions.
Centre improves to 5-1 overall while Mt. St. Joseph begins its season 0-1.
HIGHLIGHTS
Rookie righty
Carson Werrmann found himself in an early jam after getting the starting nod, but got out of a bases-loaded situation in the top of the first.
The Lions would tag him for runs in the second and third, however, with RBI singles from Jose Bustamante and Brandon Shelton.
Centre got one back in the bottom of the third when
Will Kirk drove home
Parker Selin with a liner to left field.
Freshman
Will Orren pitched admirably in four innings of no-hit relief, facing just one above the minimum while keeping the Lions off the board.
The Colonels would level the score in the sixth as Hagan beat out a potential double play, bringing in
Mason Falbo.
Sophomore
Jordan Gunter was stellar in his first pitching appearance of the season, striking out the side in the eighth to preserve the 2-2 tie.
The Lions got the potential go-ahead run to third base in the top of the ninth with just one out, but
Drew Schacht squashed the threat with consecutive strikeouts.
In the bottom of the frame, Hagan and
Chris Esselman both walked to quickly put pressure on the defense. Hilt followed with a sacrifice bunt, but when the Lions tried to force out Hagan at third the throw sailed into left field, allowing Hagan to race home.
The four Centre pitchers combined to strike out 13 batters, allowing just five hits, four walks and a pair of runs.
Austin Sharkey led Centre with two hits at the dish, while Hagan provided the game-tying RBI and game-winning run.
