Gann sets hammer record as Centre men win home invite

DANVILLE, Ky. – Centre College played host to the first of two 2019 track meets with today's Centre Invitational and the Centre men's track and field team finished comfortably in first place, scoring 202 points.

One school record fell for the Colonels as senior Hunter Gann won the hammer throw with a mark of 161-3, breaking the program record mark that had been held by Jack Schafer since the 2014 season.

The Colonels got the meet started in the 100m, where Tanner May finished third overall with a time of 11.48. Thomas Jordan finished eighth in the event with a time of 11.99. May followed up his performance in the 100m with a time of 23.23 in the 200m, good for second place overall.

In the longer races, sophomore Noel Dingle placed third overall in the 800m with a time of 2:02.13. Fellow cross country classmate Alex Emery placed fifth in the men's 5k with a time of 17:26.07. In the 10k, junior Matthew Gray and sophomore David McGrade posted respective second and third place finishes. Senior Keenan Jones posted a runner-up finish in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:22.81.

Centre dominated the hurdling events, scoring 42 points across the two races with four scorers in each one. Thomas Burkey and Henry Gunner earned respective second and third place finishes in both the 110m and 400m hurdles.

The team of Gunner, May, Jake Pfaller and Drake Nunnery picked up a second place finish in the 4x100m relay as they posted a time of 44.63.

The jumping events were also very good to the Centre men. The Colonels had six of the eight scoring marks in the long jump, led by Henry Gunner, who won the event with a mark of 21-4. In the triple jump, freshman Aaron Bastian finished in third place with a mark of 44-0, followed immediately by Pfaller at 42-0.5. In the high jump, Burkey finished second with a clear of 6-2, followed immediately by Gunner at 5-6. Burkey also finished third in the pole vault with a clear of an even 12 feet.

In addition to his record throw in the hammer, Gann finished in third place in the shot put with a mark of 43-1.75. In the discus, Bryce Whitman posted a runner-up finish with a throw of 142-9. Carter Broome placed third in the hammer with a mark of 138-2. Broome had another third place finish in the javelin with a mark of 136-11. In the same event, Burkey picked up his last points of the day, finishing second overall with a throw of 143-8.

Centre track and field will be back in action on Apr. 6 as they travel to Indiana to compete in the DePauw Invitational.
