Historic baseball season ends in SAA Tournament loss at Hendrix

CONWAY, Ark. – For the second straight contest Centre baseball found itself on the wrong side of a narrow one-run game, falling by a 4-3 score against top-seed and host Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association Tournament elimination game Saturday.

The Warriors (29-13) walked off in the bottom of the ninth to avoid their own tournament exit, sending the Colonels home with a 24-16 overall record for the year.

Centre's 24 victories mark the most in single-season program history.

HIGHLIGHTS
Centre's Nick Hoffman escaped some early threats on the mound, and the Colonels capitalized on a Hendrix error in the third for the game's opening run.

Will Kirk hit an infield single, and the ensuing throw from the Warriors shortstop got past first, allowing Seth Hagan to score.

Hagan came up with a two-out RBI double to right the next inning, bringing in Mason Falbo to make it 2-0.

The Warriors would finally get on the board with unearned runs in the fourth and fifth, knotting the contest at 2-2.

Cameron Duggins led off the seventh with a single, and eventually came in to score and give the Colonels a 3-2 lead.

Centre missed some key opportunities the rest of the way, however, loading the bases three separate times in the seventh, eighth and ninth, without pushing a run across. The Warriors were able to get timely outs to avoid any damage.

They would tie the game in the eighth on Rail Gilliam's sacrifice fly to left, and got a walk-off single from Tanner Cooper in the ninth to claim the victory.

Hoffman struck out three in five innings of work. Chris Esselman tossed three innings in relief, allowing one run, and Drew Schacht came on in the ninth.

Schacht went 2-for-4 with a walk at the dish, finishing the season with 58 base hits – one shy of the program's single-season record.
