MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Centre women's tennis fell 5-1 against No. 30 Sewanee Sunday in the Southern Athletic Association Championship, played at the Adams Tennis Complex.
Making their second title match appearance of the last three seasons, the Colonels (10-8) could not knock off the nationally-ranked Tigers (17-8), who have not lost a SAA Tournament match in seven years of the event's history.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Yet again, Centre's top double duo proved superior to their opponent.
Neha Rao and
Hannah Doherty won their 10th match of the season and seventh in a row, dropping the Tigers' Ellie Czura and Catherine Owen, 8-4.
- Sewanee took doubles 2 and 3, however, including a narrow 8-6 meeting at No. 3 between Centre's
Emily Zelichenok and
Katharine Sherman, and the Tigers' Caroline Adams and Sara Thompson.
- Singles opened with close contests across the board, but the Tigers claimed the first three finished to secure the championship.
- Owen, ranked fifth in the region, toppled Sherman, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 1 singles, and Czura exacted some revenge with a 6-2, 6-4 victory over Rao at No. 2.
- Maura McCrary picked up a point with a close 7-6, 6-2 win over
Caroline Stallings at No. 4 singles.
