LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Centre baseball team pulled off the season sweep of Transylvania for 2019 with their 19-5 victory over the Pioneers. The Colonels moved to 20-10 on the year while Transylvania fell to 12-16.
Centre didn't need the dramatics of its 6-5 comeback victory back on March 12 in Danville, scoring in bunches in Tuesday's blowout.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Jake Holloway drove in the game's first two runs with a double after Will Kirk and Drew Schacht walked. The Colonels loaded the bases later in the first inning and Parker Selin was hit by a pitch, giving Centre its third run of the frame.
- Kirk scored his second run of the game in the second inning after a Centre error, but the Pioneers struck for three runs in the bottom half of the inning after a Centre wild pitch and error.
- Centre exploded for eight runs in the third. Holloway drew a bases loaded walk and Chris Esselman singled to score Kirk for the third time in as many innings. The Colonels scored their next three runs on a bases loaded hit by pitch from Mason Falbo and a pair of Pioneer wild pitches. Seth Hagan capped off the rally with a three-run homer in what proved to be a sign of things to come for the Centre bats.
- The Colonels tacked on three more runs in the fifth inning after Esselman walked, Falbo was hit by another pitch and Jordan Gunter hit the second three-run long ball of the game for Centre.
- In the sixth inning, Centre scored its first run on a balk and then Gunter went yard once again for the final three runs of the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Colonels scored their 19 runs on just ten hits, thanks in large part to three three-run home runs. Gunter drove in six runs to lead the team, followed by Holloway and Hagan with three each.
- All eight of Centre's runs in the third inning came with two outs.
- Carson Werrmann had another solid start for the Colonels, scattering six hits over four innings while allowing just one earned run.
- In addition to the home runs, the Colonels also showed good discipline at the plate, working 11 walks out of the Transylvania pitching staff. They also benefited from wild Pioneer arms as Transy pitchers hit Centre batters six different times.
