Centre swim teams sweep Campbellsville to open season

DANVILLE, Ky. – The Centre swim teams opened up their 2021-22 season with a bang as the Colonels pulled off an impressive sweep of Campbellsville. The women's team won 194-51 while the men's team won 153-96.
 
On the women's side, Centre began the meet with a big relay victory as the team of Connor Foster, Audrey Becker, Kelsey Jenks and Claire Pellegrin took first place in the medley relay with a time of 1:57.43. The 200 freestyle relay saw Foster, Jenks and Pellegrin team with Greer Manger to win with a time of 1:45.75. In the 400 freestyle relay, the Colonels got another big win as Sophia Fogle, Kate Krogen, Meredith Walker and Peyton Patel posted a first place time of 3:59.07.
 
In the 200 freestyle, the Colonels posted a 1-2-3 finish as Callie West won with a time of 1:59.62, followed by Jenks in second place and Ashleigh Flaherty in third place. It was the first of two individual wins for West, who also won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.29. Another 1-2-3 finish came for the Colonels in the 200 individual medley. Foster took the top spot with a time of 2:21.72, followed by Sarah Albrecht in second and Pellegrin in second.
 
A trio of newcomers took the top three spots in the 50 freestyle. Fogle won with a time of 27.33, followed by Abby Jacobs in 27.76 and Krogen in 28.29.
 
The 1m diving competition saw the Colonels take all of the available points. Savannah Gupton won with 156.22 points, with Katie Hollingsworth finishing second with 131.10.
 
In addition to her relay win, Becker also picked up a pair of individual victories, taking the 100 fly in 1:01.91 and the 100 breaststroke in 1:13.51.
 
Other individual event winners for the Centre women included Manger in the 100 freestyle (56.08) and Flaherty in the 500 freestyle (5:54.69).
 
On the men's side, the Colonels pulled off a split second victory in their opening relay. Brothers Zee and Kai Oddo teamed with Bryan Killian and Jackson Fears to win the medley relay with a time of 1:38.45 as Zee Oddo touched 0.11 seconds faster than the second place relay from Campbellsville. The other two relays were a little more comfortable for the Centre men. In the 200 freestyle relay, Zee Oddo teamed with Henry Lang and newcomers Nikolai Garding and Zolon Knoll to win in 1:33.43. In the final event of the night, Kai Oddo teamed with Fears, Knoll and Lang to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:22.26.
 
Individually, the Colonels performed well on the men's side as well. In his first collegiate meet, Fears added to his two relay victories with a win in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:03.02. Knoll also picked up a win in his first ever competition at Centre, taking first place in the 100 fly in 55.90.
 
Kai Oddo also had two individual victories to go along with his two relay wins. He took first place in the 50 freestyle with a time of 22.17 and then later won the 100 backstroke in 54.88.
 
In the 1m diving competition, rookie Sam Feingold won for the Colonels, scoring 118.72 points.
 
After putting up a time of 27.49 in his leg of the medley relay, Killian won the men's 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:01.91.

The Centre swim teams will return to action on Oct. 8 as they travel to Sewanee for a conference clash.
